How It Works

The 21 million cap isn't stored as a single variable in Bitcoin's code. It emerges mathematically from the halving schedule: 50 BTC × 210,000 blocks = 10.5M, plus 25 × 210,000 = 5.25M, plus 12.5 × 210,000 = 2.625M, and so on. The sum of this geometric series (50 × 210,000 × Σ(1/2^n) for n=0 to 32) equals 20,999,999.9769 BTC, rounded to 21 million. Because Bitcoin uses integer arithmetic (satoshis, not fractional BTC), the actual total will be slightly less than 21 million due to rounding in later halvings and coins provably lost (burned to unspendable addresses).

  • The cap could be changed with a software update

    Technically any code can be forked, but changing the cap would require convincing the entire economic majority (exchanges, users, miners) to run the new code. Any fork that inflates supply would be rejected by the existing network, it would become a different coin.

  • Lost coins reduce the cap

    Lost coins (estimated 3-4 million) are still counted in the total supply, they exist on-chain but are inaccessible. They effectively reduce circulating supply, making remaining coins scarcer.

  • Exactly 21 million will exist
